Preparing Kids for School Environment Changes in India
Moving to a new country comes with many adjustments, especially for school-going children. Here are some important aspects to consider and tips to help your kids transition smoothly into the new school environment in India:
Uniforms
Children may not be used to wearing school uniforms. Prepare them for this change by discussing the dress code and letting them try on their uniforms before school starts.
Teachers’ Teaching Style and Accent
The teaching style and accent of teachers may be different from what your kids are used to. It might take some time for them to understand and adapt. Ensure that all teachers are aware that your child is new to the system. Based on feedback, teachers in Indian schools are generally very accommodating and supportive of new students.
Communication with Teachers
Regular communication with your child’s homeroom teacher is crucial. Make sure to inform them about any concerns and ask for updates on your child’s progress. Teachers are usually open to helping new students adjust.
Carry Water Bottles
Make sure your child carries their own water bottle to school every day to stay hydrated. Emphasize the importance of hygiene by teaching them to clean their bottle regularly to avoid any health issues. Refrain from drinking water from sources at school that are not filtered and advise your child to avoid using shared glasses/cups, as they may not be as hygienic.
Mosquito Protection
Apply a fabric roll-on mosquito repellent on their uniform to avoid mosquito bites at School and during commute to school.
Adjusting to New Routines
Understand the changes your kids are going through and give them time to adjust. Catching up on homework and grades can take time. Generally, it takes about a quarter for kids to get used to the new school style and catch up to their original level. Please refrain from putting undue pressure on them.
Increased Writing Work
There is generally more writing work in Indian schools compared to Western schools. Give your kids time to build up their writing stamina.
Carrying Books
Kids might not be used to carrying a lot of books to school. Remind them to leave some books at school and bring home only the necessary materials.
Support and Encouragement
Keep in touch with the homeroom teacher regularly and provide your kids with proper support. Be patient and encouraging as they navigate this new environment.
By preparing your kids for these changes and offering continuous support, you can help them adapt more easily to their new school environment in India.
